Whoops Apocalypse! No need to panic...

UPDATE
So this is a new one on me but there you go - in the industry you have to be ready for anything and often be very, very patient! You may spend hours standing around on set getting apparently nowhere (not to mention cold and hungry and a little cross at times) and then have to edit 5 hours worth of stuff in 1, so think of this as good practice!

99% of your sequences are backed up fully - that is footage AND render files (your timelines) although we cannot guarantee that everything will be perfect until we try it.

In the meantime it is going to be tricky as you can't edit in 57 or 58 although we will work out ways for you to work as soon as possible and get things finished, even if you relocate to 58. We'll ensure you have everything you need to continue and meet the deadlines.

Please make sure you have a copy of the new schedule - obviously we may have to move things a bit as new equipment and macs may not all arrive perfectly to plan but we will all make the deadlines so don't worry. Just stay focused, do as you're asked and use this time now to ensure other tasks are done.

You can't use much in media at the moment but you need to come and check in with us so we can set you all work, appropriate to your individual progress/project. This will involve catching up on blogging and working on your ancillary projects. We are FLEXIBLE but we MUST see you and help you organise and set what work you will be doing. We will plan with you, help you and CHECK you are doing what you say/plan.

WHAT TO DO
1. CHECK IN WITH US for your individual instructions - we can negotiate.
2. DO COME AT LESSON TIMES (unless agreed in advance).
3. Whilst you can't edit - Get your BLOGS UP TO DATE - you MUST use this non-editing time usefully as you have no more time, just time in a different order. So you still have the same amount of weeks, but whilst you can't edit, you must do some of the 'later jobs' instead, then when you get to the 'later jobs' time, you can edit (if you see what I'm saying).
4. Keep coming in to see us - things are changing daily. We will start work on evaluation preparation soon which involves SHOWING YOU how to utilise and get the most out of the software tools you DO have to create your multimodal evaluations and TELLING YOU what you need to do to get all the marks!
5. We may start some prep for the exam topics so don't miss out!

At the end of the day you MUST come to lessons - what we will be doing is fluid and changing on a daily basis. We can negotiate but you must do this in ADVANCE. We will still mark registers, follow up absences and monitor your progress electronically so there's no escape! Get your blogs/ancillary work done now. Then get ready to edit your heads off!

Web Sites!

After this week's lesson, look at the documents in Teaching Resources - in A2>Music Video>Websites for music promo.

IMPORTANT - you can do your website as a GROUP - BUT you MUST produce at least 2 pages each - the quality of your pages will be marked for you as an individual. You must therefore say which pages you personally created AND you MUST make sure you keep the style the same across the whole site. If you can't agree on the style, do a website each.

The key to attaining top marks in this task has a few elements:
1. Investigate (generally) how websites work, their conventions and how the audience use/read them

2. Look at a variety of websites for bands/artists to see what their sites are like. Focus on:
     a. Content - what pages do they have? what items are included?
     b. Purpose - what are they trying to achieve? Think about PROMOTION and SALES and who is creating/maintaining the site - there's much to say about institution here (i.e. record companies and PR firms who represent artists)
     c. Information - what information is given? how often is it updated?
     d. MUSIC - in terms of their 'product' (music/videos), what is available to you as a fan - what is not available and why not - for example, think about the ability of the audience to copy and download but also think about how an artist might 'win' favour by offering some things for free...and balance this against what is freely available on YOUTUBE etc? It's worth looking into merchandising as well - remember this unit is music promotion (not just music video).
     e. Style - this is very important and sort of has two 'strands'
          i. The style of the website across all the pages - how does this fit with the brand image of the artist? Genre of artist? this is about the BAND/ARTIST
ii. The style of the website as a web page (i.e. not specifically as a music site) - colours, tabs, design layout - how is it mapped out? this is about the LAYOUT
     f. Navigation ease - how do you find your way around? how easy is it to use? what is easiest to access (and why)?

3. Trajectories and Traversals - navigation. How you plan your site - is it deep or wide? How easy is it to find things? How do you plan for the audience to use your site? How did your test audience actually use the site? Theorist here is Jay Lemke.

4. Look at other student websites - here are some links to good examples

Small Town America - on Wix
The XYZs - on Wix
Absynth - on Wix

5. Use WIX to design yours (or if you must you can use iWeb which we have tutorials for/Miss can teach you). iWeb is simple drag and drop so not really first choice, WIX is already online and will enable more flashy, moving gizmos etc. Make sure IT WORKS FULLY and how you use it and what is where is CLEAR to the audience (and not just you) so TEST TEST TEST! Keep screenshots and copies in case things go wrong and to show progress in design

6. Make the effort to learn/use Photoshop (Elements in Rm57) to make great backgrounds/backdrops, or even make poster backgrounds in GLOGSTER and then export and import into WIX - basically USE EVERYTHING AVAILABLE to you - mix and match!

The documents available to you on Teaching Resources are as follows:

Audience reading of web pages:
Eye Tracking
F-shaped pattern web reading
How audiences use the internet ANSWERS
Lazy Eyes Slate Magazine

Music Specific Web Stuff:
Web Design for musicians, bands and music groups
Example music websites aut12

Mistakes in Design:

Web Design - how to - basics (overview, use of colour, layers and navigation):
How to use iWeb landscape
Web Design Beginning
Web Design Map - an example of a flat plan for a website

Testing and Researching support:
Investigatewebpagesfillinsheet
Audience feedback on website

But as always, use these as a starting point and find your own information by following your own research journey and don't forget you must BLOG your research, thoughts, plans and progress as well as writing about your website in detail in your evaluation.

Recording Production Progress

At the beginning of each lesson please:

In your notebook/sketchbook or on your blog record FOR EACH LESSON what you want to achieve in the session - think of it as setting your own learning outcome/learning objective. It only needs to be a sentence or two long and could be bullet points.

At the end of each lesson please:

In the SAME PLACE as you've recorded your aims for the session, please record what you ACTUALLY achieved - a couple of sentences or bullets is fine. This will help you to construct/blog a progression later if you have gaps and will help with your evaluation questions and exam paper (both of which ask you about progression).

Presentation Guidelines and deadlines...

Your task is to prepare a 10 minute presentation for the next lesson. It should be on your own chosen music video and you must post the finished item on your blog. We will have a lesson on how to export a powerpoint including video. Please note you must also complete your LIPSYNC - see below for guidance.

You should follow the guidance as follows. The deadline is:

13E - Tuesday 18th Sept P3
13A - Tuesday 18th Sept P5

Lipsync deadline for posting on blog - Friday 21st Sept

GUIDANCE

The 10 mins includes time to play the music video through - don't choose one that's too long. Allows time for clips within the presentation too - again, not too long.

Comment on the following:
- Narrative - is there one? is there a partial narrative? why is it important/relevant?
- Representation - who is represented in the video? in what ways? why is it important/relevant?
- Camera movement - does it match the 'shape' of the music? what happens and why?
- Editing - does the editing always cut on the beat? are there any interesting edits? does the editing create meaning or obscure it?
- What is the relationship between the visuals of the video and the lyrics of the song?
- What star 'image' or brand is being presented? How is the artist positioning themselves?

Post your response and label it 'Music Video Presentation'

Summer Holiday Work

So for many of you you're well on the way to starting Yr13 - we will be using the work you have started using Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger to teach you advanced editing skills in September.

You need to ensure that you have filmed and captured all the footage you can by the end of the summer term. You should also be working on your Lipsync.

The work that is expected to ALREADY have been completed when you come back is as follows: as with everything else at Coombe, if you don't do the work, you may find that we are reluctant to let you start the A2 course.

TO COMPLETE by SEPTEMBER 2012
1. The Lip Sync sheet - even if you have to do this at home! Most of you have phones and most laptops and computers have webcams - these will do if you have missed the opportunity to film with friends. This will need to be edited and all macs and pcs come with standard editing software which will enable you to complete the task so no excuses. This must be ready to be submitted at the very least, and certainly you should be able to upload your work to Youtube - see the main blog for the student youtube account - click 'Main Blog' above.
2. The evaluation of the Yr13 Music Videos from this year
3. The evaluation of YOUR Yr12 Film Opening Project
